The Firefighters are Coming
Hedera Firefighters Visited Beit Terezin
After the black days in December 2010 experienced by the firefighters working hard to extinguish the fire raging on the Carmel mountain ridge, we invited the firefighters from the Hedera station as a sign of appreciation, to visit Beit Terezin and to learn about the Firefighting Department in the ghetto.
The head of the Emek Hefer District Council,
Rani Idan and the director of Beit Terezin,
Oded Breda welcomed the firefighters and their commander. As a gesture of appreciation, the station commander
Isachar Tohami, received a picture of the firefighting vehicle in ghetto Theresienstadt with the firefighters commander Eng. Leo Holzer standing beside it.
The study day, held on February 8, 2011 opened by the moving testimony of the Holocaust survivor
Miriam Oypert who was a child during WWII. The firefighters visited our historic exhibition and learned about the life of Jews in the ghetto and their will to survive in an abnormal reality. They visited also the exhibition “Kamarad”, learned about the life of children and youth and about sport and the “LIGA TEREZIN”. Finally they got to know about the firefighter’s story, Eng. Leo Holzer, about the equipment at their disposal and the help they rendered everywhere in the ghetto.
