The fifth international meeting “Women and Holocaust” was held in October 2009 and dedicated to the subject “Creativity and Creation in the Holocaust – Gender-related Insights”. It lasted 3 days and took place as before, at Beit Berl, Beit Theresienstadt and Beit Lohamey Hagetaot. In Beit Theresienstadt it was also the occasion of the launching of the album “Working in a Trap” that describes the world of labor of the ghetto prisoners, in drawings and text. The original album was displayed and Dani Singer from Great Britain, daughter of Dr. Edith Ornstein (Dittl), who was one of the book’s editors, gave a very emotional lecture (in English).
The opening lecture by Dr. Miri Freilich was dedicated to VitkaKempner Kovner, former partisan, psychologist from kibutz Ein Hahoresh who was prevented by illness from attending the meeting. Vitka did not write or draw, but in her courage and resourcefulness the young partisan showed a creative personality, said Dr. Freilich, who is now finishing the writing of Vitka’s biography and also producing a film that is in the last stages of editing. Vitka is known mainly as the life companion of the poet and partisan Abba Kovner (1912 – 1987).
For Beit Theresienstadt lectured Ruth Bondy on raising babies in the ghetto, Anita Tarsi on the subject of women’s labor in the ghetto and Dr. Margalit Shlain who talked about the diary of Alisa Sheck.
